Reconstruction
I see reconstuction as a failure. Yes, it helped put the country back together, and yes, it gained black's 'rights' but in the same aspect, it helped the South come up with more ways to oppress blacks such as the KKK. Even with the additon of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, angry southerners found loop-hole ways to take away the rights of black living in the South.

I completely agree with your opinion. How can anyone call the reconstuction a "sucess" when even after the Confederates and the Union united after the civil war, the south continued to discriminate against African-Americans? If the Reconstruction Era was a success then the leaders would have been able to control the south and prevent further mistreatment of African Americans and other races. Also, the leaders would not have allowed the creation of the Ku Klux Klan and other violent groups. There were too many mishaps and poor decisions made during the Reconsruction Era that prevented it from being called a "sucess."
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I think that socially it was a failure because it did nothing to ease the tension for Southerners against blacks. They were not "free" as some people liked to put it. They were still discriminated against and their rights were still being violated. Also, economically Reconstruction was a failure because it did nothing to help our industries and the South was in ruins.
